The flag used in Ajdovščina is not official; it might have been used since 1980. It shows the emblem of the municipality.
The municipal statutes adopted in 1999 prescribe a flag and coat of arms to be adopted by a subsequent Decision. The municipal website has a detailed description of the flag and emblem, which must have been taken from some official document, however.

The emblem of Ajdovščina is prescribed by Decision Odlok o znaku Občine Ajdovščina, adopted on 20 November 1990 and published on 28 December 1990 in the local official gazette Uradno glasilo občin Ajdovščina, Nova gorica in Tolmin 12/1990.
The Decision prescribes that "Republika Slovenija" shall be written above the emblem; however, it seems that this inscription is never included in practice, as shown on the municipal website.
The emblem has the outlines and the inscription in silver, as opposed to the flag, where thesy are in black.

Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] write that the emblem symbolizes the antiquity of the town. The ruins represent the Roman town Ad Fluvium Frigidum (At the Cold River). The green waves represent the north-eastern wind (burja) and the fertility of the valley. The shades of green are, according to the HKS system: light green 67K, green 65K and dark green HKS 64K.
