The municipality of Prizren (221,000 inhabitants in 2006, including
171,000 in the town of Prizren proper) is located in southern Kosovo,
sharing a border with both Albania and Macedonia.
In the late 19th century, Prizren was a stronghold of Albanian
nationalism. Aimed at defending the Albanian-inhabited lands from
being annexed by Slavic countries in the Balkans and seeking autonomy
for Albania under the Ottoman Empire, the League of Prizren was
established on 10 June 1878, disbanded in 1881, and partially
reorganized unsuccessfully.
