About the flag

The flag is quartered black over yellow and the coat of arms is gules, on a sea of three waves, azure and argent (usually it would be vert and argent, for blue stands for rivers, not see…), a galion or, draped argent and bearing on the main sail a cross of five eschuteons azure, each charged with a saltire of bezants argent. And on a cheif azure a castle or (canting arms, as "castelo" means "castle"). The weird thing here is that Viana do Castelo has city rank and thus the coat of arms crown is five-towered, but the flag itself is and remains quartered, as those of towns

Presentation of Viana do Castelo

A city in northwestern Portugal, currently in the Viana do Castelo District, once in the province Minho. In 1992, 83 620 inhabitants in 40 communes covering 316 km2.
