About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain white background. The coat of arms is purple, a castle argent open sable charged with a St. James cross and between two crescents or in chief issuant from a counterchief of sis wayvy fesses argent and vert. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE SESIMBRA".
António Martins, 13 Jun 2000

As usual, the castle stands for the local castle, the crescents for it’s former moorish lordship, the cross for the Order of St. James (Ordem de Santiago da Espada) and the wavy fesses for the sea.

Version without the coat of arms

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
Jorge Candeias, 18 Jul 1999
