About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a on a plain green background. The coat of arms is argent between two pine trees crowned vert and trunked and fruited sable two swallows set in pale flying downwards the upper one dexterwards and the bottom one sinisterwards bellow a butterfly displayed of the same. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA NOVA DE POIARES".
António Martins, 16 Dec 2003

The butterfly on the arms stands for the local silk production (if I recall correct), and the pine trees refer to the hardely original local aboundance of them. No idea about the swallows.
António Martins, 16 Dec 2003

Version without the coat of arms

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
Jorge Candeias, 18 Jul 1999
