About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain green background. The coat of arms is sable on a mond vert issuant from a counterchief sable a tree (what kind?) sable flanked by two castles argent masoned sable each above a fortress likewise, in chief an escutcheon with Portugal modern flanked by a sun or sinister and a moon argent dexter and by a pair of eight pointed stars or. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "ESTREMOZ".

This is the kind of cluttered heraldic achievements that apparently are favoured by the Portuguese Heraldry Institute
António Martins, 06 Sep 2003

I’ve just been to and I can say, to the Institute’s defense, that a very old looking church in the village (either romanic or gothic style, I wasn’t sure), near the castle and the pousada, is ornated with a rectangular stone upon which were carved the elements of the current coat-of-arms, although I think the portuguese shield was simpler, perhaps only a quina. The stone looked quite worn and I don’t think it would have been a modern installation: I think the current arms are based to a large extent in an older mediaeval grant.

Version without the coat of arms

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
