About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a background gyronny (meaning city rank) of purple and white. The coat of arms is or, a rose gules between two ogival escuteons azure, charged with 11 bezants argent in 3+2+3+2+1, all entangled in two vines, one fruited or and the other purple, both leaved vert. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DO CARTAXO".
António Martins, 19 Jul 1999

The nation wide fame of Cartaxo’s wines is well represented on the coat of arms.
António Martins, 19 Jul 1999

Commune flags

Valada

The communal flag is white and blue, gyronny. Surprisingly so for the communal seat is a village, not a city: The law says that entities seated in towns or villages must be either plain or quartered, never gyronny.
