Not surprisingly, the flag is green with coat of arms in the centre. The
coat of arms has a 4-towered mural crown, a
scroll reading "VILA DE AVIS" and a shield, as always.
The shield has a green Avis cross on a white
(probably silver in the official description) background, and an escutcheon
centered in the cross. The escutcheon is charged with a black eagle over a
tree (probably a cork-oak) proper on a golden background. In a different
source, the scroll comes with the inscription "CÂMARA MUNICIPAL
DE AVIS" and in a very light yellow instead of white.

Avis today, is a small town by the Maranhão dam, that belongs to the
Portalegre district, old province of
Alto Alentejo, and possible future
region of Alentejo. Historically, though, it’s
a very important place, since in the middle ages, it was the headquarters
of one of the most important military orders of portuguese history, that
even gave birth to one of the 4 portuguese dynasties:
the order of Avis. Today’s municipality has an
area of 605,6 km2 and a little over 5500 inhabitants, distributed
in 8 communes. The economy is, as far as I know, very rural.
