Flag adopted in 1833. Cieszyn is in Cieszyn county, on the Czech border. German name: Teschen. Czech name: Téšín. Population (1981): 34.590. Divided 1920 between Poland (Cieszyn, on eastbank of Olsa river) and Czechoslovakia (Ceský Téšín, on westbank of the Olsa; reunited under Polish rule 1938 but western tosn returned to Czechoslovakia at end of WWII. First mentioned 1155; seat of duchy 1290-1653; treaty ending War of the Bavarian Succession signed 1779; in World War I Austrian headquarters till 1917.
