Nieszawa commune

Nieszawa - urban commune, Aleksandrów Kujawski County, Kujawsko-pomorskie Voivodship - German name: Nessau.
Nieszawa is a town and a commune in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodship, in north-central Poland.
Area: 9.79 sq.km (3.8 sq.mi); Population: 2,012 (2006).

In 1230, Duke Konrad I of Masovia gifted the town to the Teutonic Knights.
In 1410 - the town went back to Poland. It was twice relocated upstream of Vistula River.

1807-15 in Grand Duchy of Warsaw
1815-1914 in (Russian) Kingdom of Poland
1914-18 German occupation
1918- back in Poland
1939 - another German occupation - massacre of local residents to terrorize the town
1945 - taken by the Soviet Red Army - several remaining Germans murdered by the Poles
2004 - a monument erected: "Przebaczamy i prosimy o przebaczenie"
                                          „Wir vergeben und bitten um Vergebung"
                                          "We forgive and ask for forgiveness"

Arms originally adopted on October 3, 1936
Flag proposal accepted by the City Council on September 27, 2007 and submitted for the approval to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration and the Heraldic Commission.
It still awaits a final decision of both authorities.

"Arms: a white, crowned eagle holding a silver fish in its talons. All on a red field.

Flag: colors are related to the history of the town: blue symbolizes a dependence on Vistula River for the well-being of the city. Also, it is a color of the Anjou dynasty of King (Reigning Queen) Jadwiga - patroness of the town. Black recalls the Teutonic Knights ownership of 200 years and white and red are the national colors of Poland.
In the middle of the quarterly divided flag of dark blue, white, black and red (clockwise) is the town's Coat of Arms."
