Świdnica commune flag
Świdnica - rural commune, Świdnica County, Dolnośląskie Voivodship - former
German name: Schweidnitz.
On August 9, 1996, the Commune's Council passed the Resolution of the
adoption of the Arms and the flag of the Swidnica Commune.
"The Arms are the reflection of the traditions, natural environment
and important events of the Commune.
The Owl, sitting on the triple hill, symbolizes the Owl Mountains and
the Hills of Walbrzych and it is connected with the hilly character of
the Commune's territory and its tourist routes.
The owl is universally recognized as a symbol of wisdom, vigilance,
witticism and solitude (in the heraldic sense)
Red Griffin symbolizes the links with the City of Swidnica- it is that
city's symbol since 1452.
The griffin, in the heraldry, is a symbol of the knightly bravery,
and in Christianity it is a symbol of the hypostatic union of the joint
divine and human nature of Christ.
The wheat stalk symbolizes the agricultural character of the Commune.
In the heraldry, it represents the munificence of the land.
The Olive Branch recalls the very important event, which took place
in the village of Krzyzowa on November 12, 1989.
It was a High Mass of Reconciliation attended by Polish Prime Minister
- Tadeusz Mazowiecki and German Chancellor - Helmut Kohl, shortly after
Poland emerged from the darkness of Communist occupation as an independent
and democratic nation, and Germany were re-unified.
That Mass was a further step in the reconciliation and building the
friendship between Polish and German Nations after the pastoral letter
of Polish Bishops to their German brothers: "We forgive and ask for forgiveness"
of 1965, on the eve of Polish Millenium, in the spirit of Christan humility.
("Hirtenbrief der polnischen Bischöfe an ihre deutschen Amtsbrüder")
The flag of the Swidnica Commune is a horizontal tri-band of red, yellow
and blue - the colors of the Arms."
