About the flag

Austrheim municipality is situated in Hordaland county.

As an island community, Austrheim wanted a design reflecting its geographical characteristics. Originally, the favoured design was a shield with alternating bands of blue and white triangles, the triangles being larger at the bottom than at the top. It was though that such a design suggested the many islands in a nice way. Blue was chosen to represent the sea, white the land. However, this design was rejected by the heraldic expertise because of the use of perspective. Instead, the municipality chose a design of three curved white lines on a blue field, symbolizing the bridges connecting the islands. This design was made by Svein Skauge and was approved in Royal resolution of 17 February 1989.
