The CoA of Alphen aan den Rijn consists of a black 8-pointed star on
a white shield. On top of the shield is a golden crown. The shield is supported
by two golden lions. The arms were originally of the van Alphen-family,
a branch of the van Kralingen-family. Dirk van Cralingen (born before 1189)
owned estates in the vicinity of Alphen en had his name changed into "Van
Alphen". In the 17th century Alphen florished: it became a resting
place for post-riders and mercantile travel over land and water. Along
stretches of the Oude Rijn river one can still see the tow-path, used for
pulling "trekschuiten", tow-boats. The present municipality of Alphen
aan den Rijn was formed in 1918. Then the smaller municipalities of Alphen,
Aarlanderveen and Oudshoorn were merged. In 1964 the municipality absorbed
the municipality of Zwammerdam.
