Elburg municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 21.691; area: 65,95 km². Settlements: Elburg (seat), Doornspijk, 't Harde, Hoge Enk, Oostendorp.
Elburg is an old Zuiderzee-town, which retained its medieval character of a fishers port. It was one of the Dutch Hanseatic towns.
The flag contains the municipal CoA without the lion in the gate-opening. The castle stands for 'burg' = castle.
In 1974 the municipalities of Elburg and Doornspijk merged to the new municipality of Elburg, which used the Elburg flag, as adopted in 1970. Doornspijk never had a flag. In 1982 Elburg celebrated its 750th birthday, and the municipality decided to have a new flag designed. On 26 Aug 1982 the present flag was adopted by the municipal council. In the flag the former municipalities are both recognizable: the red gate-building from the old Elburg, and the "sleedoorntakken" (blackthorn-branches) as symbols of Doornspijk.
