Munnekezijl village (Muntsjesyl)

Munnekezijl / Muntsjesyl: "Flag: Chequy, blue and white of nine rectangles on three horizontal stripes; the central rectangle is red.
Colors: cobaltblue, clear-red and white.
In 1471 the monks of Gerkesklooster built a lock ("zijl") NNE of Burum, hence the name of the village; the flag is in analogy of Burum.
Nickname: Kûdieven (cow-thiefs; Long time ago a cow was stolen in Munnekezijl. The police found late at night the thief's house and saw the cow ruminating in the closet-bedstead (bedstee)).
