All states had own coats of arms and own flags before 1970. The flag was in each case was modeled on the Nigerian flag, which was occupied with the State Coat of Arms in the center of the white strip. All state flags were adopted 1967 and struck 1970. Since 1970 only the Nigerian coat of arms and flag may be used as symbol of a state.
