Malaysian Airlines started on 12 October 1937, as Malayan Airways Limited (MAL), an air service between Penang and Singapore proposed jointly by the Ocean Steamship Co. of Liverpool, the Straits Steamship of Singapore and Imperial Airways; on 2 October 1947, MAL became the national carrier. The name of the company was changed to Malaysian Airlines Ltd. after the formation of Malaysia in 1963, while Borneo Airways was incorporated to the company. In 1965, Singapore seceded from Malaysia and MAL was renamed Malaysia-Singapore Airlines. The company split in 1973, the Malaysian branch being renamed Malaysian Airline Ltd., subsequently Malaysian Airlines System. The common name of the company is Malaysia Airlines.

The flag of the national career Malaysia Airlines can be seen on photographs taken during the 4th French Open of Sepak Takraw, held in Strasbourg on 2-3 September 2006. Sepak Takraw is a sport very popular in South-Eastern Asia, and Malaysia Airlines seems to be the main sponsor of the Malaysian national team. The flag is in proportions 1:2, white with a thin red stripe on top and a thin blue stripe on bottom, in the middle the red-blue emblem of the company, below it the name of the company in blue letters.

The Malaysian Airlines logo is a depiction of the "wau bulan" which is a traditional kite from this region. A simple google image search of this term will show you several examples of the real kite.
