Goce Delcev University was founded on 27 March 2007 by the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia. The idea behind the establishment of a university in Štip is more than 30 years old. At the inaugural meting of 28 June 2007 the University Senate of the Goce Delcev University in Štip elected Prof. Dr. Saša Mitrev as the Rector of the University.
The university is located in eleven Macedonian cities: Štip, Strumica, Kočani, Radoviš, Probištip, Vinica, Sveti Nikole, Gevgelija, Kavadarci, Prilep and Kriva Palanka. It started with seven faculties (Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Music, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Faculty of Mines, Geosciences and Technology, and Faculty of Agriculture) and one vocational school (School of Healthcare). As of 2008/09 academic year the University includes six new faculties (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Philology, Faculty of Tourism and Business Logistics, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and Faculty of Electrical Engineering). 3,500 students are enrolled at the university in their first academic year.
Štip has long and distinguished educational tradition. Josiv Kovacev (born 14 January 1839) trained theologians and priests in his famous school. At the time they were unique of their kind in Macedonia and were highly specialized educational organizations. Štip is the native city of the first librarians on the Balkans, the Kostencevi brothers. The first pedagogic book was written in Štip. It is the city that staged in 1924 the first opera ever to be performed in Macedonia.
The flag of the university is red with the university symbol on it.
