Overview

Varniai (Telsiai District) - on a red field a silver mounted St. George slaying a green dragon with a golden lance. Flag proportions 10:11, free edges bordered with a narrow silver stripe, fringe is red, finial is a golden lance head. The charge of arms granted in 1635 used St. George for two reasons:
(1) Varniai as the capital of Samogitia diocese was the stronghold of Catholicism in its fight against Protestantism;
(2) St. George was the holy patron of Jurgis Tiskevicius, the recently consecrated bishop of Samogitia.
