According to the city website,
the city symbol was adopted 1 April 1969 and symbolizes the city
development. The city symbol is green, representing solidarity of
the people (interpretation enacted 10 Marh 1988), although my
original source document appears to have shown the symbol in a
purple.

Toyota was originally known as Koromo, the sole distribution center for silk
works in the Mikawa region from the Taisho era though the early 20th century. In
1930, the silk industry began to decline and in 1934, Koromo began seeking investments
in the automobile industry. In 1959, the name was changed to Toyota. The city is
located in Chubu District.
