In 1907, Nagano city conducted a study to find an appropriate symbol for
the city. In October, 1907, the "Maruhachi" (circle 8) symbol was
selected by the city assembly. This symbol reportedly was used by the Owari
Tokugawa clan. The symbol has been included on the city flag.

The city flag was adopted on Mar 29th 1967 by the Municipal Notice No 27. It is a white flag charged with dull green city emblem in the center. The flag proportions are 2:3.
The dull green color is made to be mixed blue of beautiful sky and clear water
of Nagano and green of trees and grasses giving people an ease. It symbolizes the
figure of the city which makes a rapid progress and rich development to the future
with civic harmony and solidarity while living together with nature.
The city emblem is round shaped stylized kanji 長 NAGA.
The modern form represents the image of a new city and its depth and tone.
