Nin is a city in the Zadar County, 15 km north of Zadar, 9,000 inhabtants, but only some
1,500 in the city itself. The place is of very big historic (and
touristic) value, as the seat of Croatian dukes in 7th and 8th
century (notably duke Vielav around 800) and the site of
the first Croatian dicese in 9th century. Also seat of latter
kings and church assemblies (e.g. in 1387 was held the state
parliament session there). The church of St. Cross that is found
on the flag of the county is also situated in Nin. In the new
teritorial division of Croatian, until 1997 Nin had status of a
community.
The coat of arms of Nin pictures the city with its walls and
towers followed with a six-pointed star, originating from the
emblem of the city of pre-heraldic period. As is the case with
many old cities on Adriatic, the heraldification of this emblem
was slow and of many variants. The modern depiction of the coat
of arms has been adopted recently based on the medieval
(rectangular) reliefs preserved in the city walls. The flag is
blue with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle.
