The city of Varadinske Toplice, some 12 km SE of
Varadin, has history reaching the Ancient Roman period,
when it was known as Aquae Isae and were known for its
termal sumporic spas. It is not surprising that the health
tourism is today the most important economy in the pitoresque
little city. Since the administrative reorganization in 1992
until rehawl in 1997 Varadinske Toplice was a community.
Population: 7,200 (Zemljopisni atlas Republike Hrvatske",
kolska knjiga, Zagreb 1993).
The symbols were determined with a decision mentioned in he new
city statutes: Statut Grada Varadinske Toplice, 25.09.2001,
Slubeni vjesnik Varadinske upanije, br.
17/2001. The decision is named: Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada
Varadinske Toplice, but it gives no details when it was
published and where (though I apresume it would be around 1997,
in SVV, too)
The coat of arms, as seen on the road signs and similar (by my
observation and photos), is Azure a sea-lion or rampant langued
and n armed gules holding in his dexter a castle argent roofed
gules with a belfry. The flag is most certainly monocoloured with
the coat of arms in the middle, but I have no yet confirmation on
the field colour. (Possibly
white.)

In the mean time a new decision was made to superseed it, but
as far as I am aware, it does not change anything in the descign
of the coat of arms nor the flag. So the old and the new
decisions are: Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Varadinske
Toplice, Slubeni vjesnik Varadinske upanije,
br. 19/1999. Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Varadinske
Toplice, 16.04.2003, Slubeni vjesnik Varadinske
upanije, br. 7/2003, 18.04.2003.
The flag is blue (dark blue as seen in flags hoisted on the
cityhall) with the coat of arms in the middle (this using light
blue in the shield) bordered with a yellow line.
Previously I have been showing the flag (on the FAME)
without the yellow line, since it was not visible on the photos I
had, but the border is clearly defined in the decision.

Marko Vitez located an other photo of ceremonial
flag, that of the city of Varadinske Toplice. The photo
is shown on the web site of flag manufacturers "Valentino vez".
The ceremonial flag is blue gonfalon ending triangularly with
golden fringe, with the coat of arms in the middle, the name of
the city in three arches above and a wreath of six maiz ears
below it.

Coat of Arms and flag were designed by Heraldic Art d.o.o from
Rijeka and approved by the Ministry of Administration/Central
State Office for Administration before 2006.

The new 2009 Statutes (Statut Grada Varadinske Toplice,
10.07.2009, Slubeni vjesnik Varadinske upanije,
br. 19/2009, 11.07.2009), now includes the full description of
the Coat of Arms, the flag and the ceremonial flag - neither was
described in the 2006 not 2001 statutes. Also, the description of
the ceremonial flag is quite different from the one we know.
Namely, the description is more like the standard flags designed
by the Heraldic art: blue gonfalon with the Coat of Arms in the
centre of it and the name of the city above, but the fly end has
three tails with golden fringe, each containing an oak ornament.
Well, one we know is prescribed, the other we know from photos
that it exists...
At the same time the city adopted a new decision on the Coat of
Arms and the flag (Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Grada
Varadinske Toplice, 10.07.2009, Slubeni vjesnik
Varadinske upanije, br. 19/2009, 11.07.2009),
superseding the 2003 decision (which described only the Coat of
Arms and flag and not the ceremonial flag). The descriptions in
the Statutes and in this Decision now include longs explanation
of the symbolic. The blue field of the shield symbolizes the
sulphur thermal spa being known here from the Roman times, golden
"griffin (water lion)" (sic!) stands for long rich
history and tradition of the use of the thermal waters. The
golden outline of the shield stands for welfare in the city. The
belfry visible in the Coat of Arms is the St. Martin belfry,
symbolizing "the emergence of city symbols since 1420 by the
grant of Free Marketplace Charter and right to choose judge,
granted by the Zagreb Chapter, previous owner of Varadinske
Toplice" (note, this does not imply that these symbols are
anywhere near that old!) The oak ornaments stand for the wooded
and healthy surroundings of the city.
