Overview

Gunja is a community in the Vukovar-Srijem County, in its south on the Sava River, that makes border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, 75 km south of Vukovar. Just over 5,000 ihnabitants living in a single large village composing the community. Ethnically, some 65% of them are Croats, about 14% Bosniaks, 4% Serbs and yet over 10 other different minorities; religiously, some 65% are Catholic, 30% Muslims. This makes it understandable that Gunja is considered to have the oldest mosque in Croatia built in 1969 (that is, the oldest built after the liberation of Slavonia from Ottomans in 1700).
The coat of arms of Gunja (b/w image, but much larger then it appears on the first glance) is available at the community web site. The flag may be seen at a photo on the web site of the local school.
The coat of arms of Gunja is azure St. Jacob stantant holding a staff in his dexter and a scroll in his sinister and wearing a bag ensigned with a shell all or. This refers to the Church of St. Jacob the Apostle built in Gunja in 1849. The shell on the bag that the figure is wearing is the traditional ecclesiastic attribute of St. Jacob.
The flag is light blue with the coat of arms bordered golden in the middle.
