Andrijaevci is a community in the Vukovar and Srijem
County, 10 km south east of Vinkovci,
4,250 inhabitants of which almost 2,200 in the village of the
same name, and the other half in near by Rokovci (according to
some soruces, the seat of administration is in Rokovci, although
the official list do not mention that - while they mention
whenever the place of administrative seat is different from the
community name). It is said that in Andrijaevci are still
living the heirs of the Croats living there before the Turkish
occupation, who remained there during the occupation until the
liberation in 1700 and ever afterwards - which is indeed
remarkable for a Slavonian village.
The coat of arms of Andrijaevci is:
argent a hound rampant holding in its jaws a loaf of bread or.
The flag is red with the coat of arms in the middle bordered
yellow. The table flag is a variation of the
ceremonial flag, red gonfalon with three triangularly ending
tails containing oak ornaments, with the coat of arms in the
middle and the name of the community above.
The symbols were designed by Heraldic
Art d.o.o of Rijeka, the table flag of atypical design is
shown on their web site.
The patron saint of Andrijaevci (as may be gathered from
the name) is St. Andrew the Apostle, so one would expect to see
the saltire (Andrew's cross) there somewhere. However, the
symbols chosen is a dog with a loaf of bread which reminds me of
St. Roch (Rocco), and the legend telling how he fed a starving
dog from a sore he made on his leg dipping bread in his blood.
Compare it with the symbols of Drni
picturing St. Roch. Now, knowing that the second village in the
community is named Rokovci with patron St. Roch the Pilgrim, make
me think that my instinct is not all that far fetching.
