Overview

Sutivan is a community on the Island of Brac in the Split-Dalmatia county. It was formed in 1997 by secession from the Milna community. The coat of arms of Sutivan pictures two saints, the name sake of the town St. John and her patron St. Roch: Azure, in dexter St. John Baptist stantant haloed or haired and barbed maroon clead in cammel fur gules with his dexter hand rised and holding in his sinister a staff or with a pennant argent hoisted from a crossbar, in sinister St. Roch stantant haloed or haired and barbed maroon clead as Roman warrior gules with a cloak of the same and with boots or holding in his dexter a staff or and by his sinister pointing to a wound on his leg.   The flag is blue with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle. The symbols were adopted on 10 October 2003 by the decision: Odluka o izgledu i uporabi grba i zastave Opcine Sutivan, 10.10.2003, Službeni glasnik Opcine Sutivan. The similarity of the graphical style makes it dubtless that the symbols were designed by the Rijeka company Heraldik-art d.o.o. One may also compare the design with two other designs picturing one of the saints: Baška and Drniš. Information kindly provided by Franjo Mlinac, Sutivan.

Some more historical information at <sutivan.hr> (including the old seal image): The community of Sutivan was first established in 1823 and integrated into the larger community of Brac only in 1944. In that period it used a seal that already included the pictures of the two saints in a similar disposition as in the modern coat of arms.

The web site from which I based my previous report, now includes a drawing of the gonfalon of Sutivan.
The ceremonial flag is a dark blue triangularly ending yellow bordered and long the bottom fringed gonfalon with the yellow bordered coat of arms in the middle, the yellow name of the community in two arches above and with yellow branches of fig and olive tree and a bunch of grapes below.
