Overview

Sucuraj is a community on the island of Hvar in its eastern edge, in the Split-Dalmatia County, some 60 km southeast of Split. The name Sucuraj is a local form of the name St. Grorge (Sveti Juraj > *Sut Juraj > Sucuraj).  Source: newspapers article M. Crncevic: "Odobrenjem ministarstva pravosuda i lokalne uprave - Opcini Sucuraj grb i zastava", Slobodna Dalmacija, Split, 16.12.2003. (was available at <www.slobodnadalmacija.hr> ).
The coat of arms of Sucuraj is azure a knight on a horse (St. George) piercing a dragon all or. The flag is blue with a golden-yellow bordered coat of arms in the middle. There is also a gonfalon adopted for a ceremonial flag, of which I have no more detailed info.   The article names the designers Heraldik-art d.o.o. of Rijeka. Also, there is an explanation in the article how come that the desiign was adopted - even if there are already numerous communities and cities in Croatia pictuing in they arms St. George. The community of Sucuraj gained the approval of this design by the Ministry, first of all, because in its archives it is preserved a dry seal with the saint's image dating from the time of the Napoleonic rule in Sucuraj.
