Overview

Knin is a city in the Šibenik-Knin County situated in the hinterland some 60 km northeast of Šibenik. The city florished during the reign of the king Dmitar Zvonimir in 10th cenutury, so it is often nick-named poetically the City of Zvonimir (Zvonimirov grad, just like Šibenik is then named Krešimirov grad). The city is important corssroad and railroad junction. In the newer history it became infamous as the capital of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina, liberated in August 1995.
Knin was a community in Zadar-Knin County (Županija Zadarsko-kninska), until 1997 when it gained status of a city and included in the (since then called) Šibenik-Knin County. Before 1997 Knin was also capital of a kotar (district) of the same name including several other communities, but this organization never functioned properly as the area was occupied, and Knin was de facto capital of the Serb state formed from the parts secessioned of Croatia (in fact, it was capital de jure according to the laws of Serb Krayina, but those laws were not recognized in Croatia).
The coat of arms of Knin is based on the historical pattern, though am not sure when that dates from and who exactly it looked like. During the last decades of the socialism (i.e. in 1980's) it used a Coat of Arms showing the Paschal lamb passant in a blue shield on green base, but devoided of any religious emblems (so, no flag carried on the staff and no halo), but yet retaining the characteristic position of the lamb.As such was alo being shown in early 1990's (on posters and like). I am not aware of any flag that went with it.
Sometime after 1995 (I estimate 1998, but could be as late as 2002) the new modern artwork from the workshop of Rijeka company Heraldik-art d.o.o. was adopted, as could be seen on the official site Grad Knin: službene stranice <www.knin.hr> (01.07.2003) and on photos of the flags used sent ot me by Tomislav Šipek, 10.07.2003.
The Coat of Arms of Knin is: Azure a lamb passant argent holding a cross-staff or an in the canton Zvonimir's crown or with stones gules. It is basical the same crown as shown in the Coat of Arms of the County.
The flag is red with yellow bordered coat of arms in the middle.
I have no doubt that there is also a ceremonial flag, but at the moment no info.

Update with data from official gazette:
- Statutarna odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Knina, 13.04.2001, Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, br. 3/01, 18.04.2001. Odluka o mjerilima i postupku za odobravanje uporabe grba i zastave Grada Knina, Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, br. 3/01, 18.04.2001. The statutory decision determines the coat of arms, the flag and the ceremonial flag of Knin. The lamb is named (of course) Agnus Dei (Jaganjac Božiji). The ceremonial flag is dimensioned 80 x 160 cm, red gonfalon bordered golden with fringe at the bottom. In the middle is the coat of arms, above it golden inscription Grad Knin bordered with golden contour. In the tails are golden branches of vine and olvice also bordered golden. Unfortunately, this description does not allow enough details for reconstruction to be drawn, and there are no pictures attached to the decision in the gazette. The other decision determines the rules and procedures of the grant of use of the coat of arms and the flag.
- Rješenje o odobrenju grba i zastave Gradu Kninu, 28.03.2001, Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, br. 9/01, 20.08.2001. The act of the Ministry of Justice, Administration and Local Self- Government, kl. UP/I-017-01/98-01/54, urbr. 514-09-01-01-5, approves the decision of 2001.
- Statut Grada Knina, 31.10.2001, Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, br. 17/01, 11.12.2001. - The new statutes include the description of the coat of arms and the flag together with the reference of the act of the Ministry approving it. the exact wording of the blazon follows the blazon provided by the Ministry.
Željko Heimer, 19 August 2006

The city adopted new documents regarding their symbols on 21 July 2006 to replace two similar decision of 2001: Statutarna odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Knina, 21.07.2006, Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, br. 12/06, 30.08.2006. Odluka o mjerilima za uporabu grba i zastave Grada Knina, Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, br. 12/06, 30.08.2006.
The new decision does not bring anything new, the main difference from the previous decision is that the description of the coat of arms is somewhat simplified - the excessive description of what's symbolizing what was removed according to the blazon provided by the Ministry in its approval decision. However, what's nice for us is that this new decision in the official gazette includes the drawings of the coat of arms, the flag and the ceremonial flag.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. from Rijeka.
