Overview

Ližnjan (in Italian: Lisignano) is a community in the easter part of the southernmost tip of the Istrian peninsula, 50 km south of Pazin . Population 2,000, some 700 in the town of the same name. The community has the Pula Airport on its territory.   The community uses a [Previous] coat-of-arms-like emblem in a shield shape: quartered by a cross or, argent, gules, azure and vert. The shield is crowned with a yellow crown.  The emblem is probably not approved by the Ministry and no flag to go with it was reported.

According to an artcile in the local newspapers Glas Istre of 22 December 2004 at <www.glasistre.hr>, the community adopted symbols on 20 December 2004, after it was approved from the Ministry. The company that designed the symbols is "MOD" from Pula (accoridng to the pulic records of the Ministry of Justice, there is a company named MOD d.o.o. from Pula lead by Danilo Dragosavac, who is known as a photographer).   The coat of arms of Ližnjan is azure a broom branch or.   The Spanish broom (Spartium junceum L.) called locally brnistra or žuka blossoms from April to July in the Ližnjan litoral.   The flag is yellow with the coat of arms offset towards the canton.

The name Spartium comes from Ancient Greek sparton, a broom's rope, the broom being called in Ancient Greek spartos. In French, the making of hats, bags, carpets... with smooth and resistant vegetal fibers is called sparterie (I have not found the English equivalent). Different plants can be used, including the graminaceous plants sparte (Lygeum spartum) and  alfa (Stipa tenacissima, aka vegetable horsehair).
