Petlovac is a community of some 5,000 inhabitants in
south-west corner of Baranja, some 30 km east of Osjiek. It is a relatively large
community by terriroy, which is seen also from the fact that only
about 1,000 inhabitants live in the main village landing its name
to the community.
On HTV news was shown on 2.11.2003 what is presumably a flag of
the community, on a celebration on he occasion of uncovering of a
monument in Baranjsko Petrovo Selo. Unfortunately the sightings
was far to brief to have any ore detailed info, but this: the
flag in ratio 1:2 contains a yellow wide Scandinavian cross
(width approximately 1/3 of hoist, forming square fields next to
the hoist), the fields formed by the cross are each in its own
colour - I have noted them to be (clockwise from canton) red,
blue, green and black, though I am far from sure on that order.
In the center of the cross is a black rooster (canting the
community name) standing on two wavy lines apparently along the
entire horisontal bar of the cross.
A nice flag, different from the boring monocoloures, though that
may well be the reason why it may be only _de facto_ and not
confirmed by the Ministry. We'll have to wait for more info...

As suggested above, this is probably only an unofficial flag
used before the "real" flags were approved by the
Ministry. This apparently have been so, as seen on the community
site at <www.petlovac.hr>.
The coat of arms of Petlovac is: azure a plough share-argent
palewise between a wreath of palm branches or and in chief a
forked knife argent handeled or. This coat of arms probably
originates from late XIXth century. At least this is style of
coat of arms granted to many of villages in late XIX century in
the Hungarian part of the Austria-Hungary, compare other smaller
places in Baranja, but also in Vojvodina and Hungary. I am not
sure what the "froked knife" (as I call it) is named
and what it is for, but it is obviously an agricultural tool. The
palm branches are my identification and may be wrong also.
However, I thing I got the best from the bad and distorted image
provided on the site.
The flag is yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.

I believe it is a kind of billhook, mostly used to cut
branches. See: <www.billhooks.co.uk>
and <en.wikipedia.org>.

Coat of Arms and flag were designed by Heraldic Art d.o.o from
Rijeka and approved by the Ministry of Administration/Central
State Office for Administration before 2006.

The web
site of the community now depicts also the ceremonial
flag: a pale yellow gonflaon ending in three triangularly
ending tails, with the coat of arms bordered golden in the centre
of it, above the name of the communities in two arches in green
letters and below crossed branches of oak and linden.
