Knezevi Vinogradi is a community in the Osijek and Baranja
County in the central Baranja region some 30 km nroth of Osjiek, with about 5,200 inhabitants
total in 9 villages, and 1,700 inhabitants in the main village of
the same name. Ethnically, about 40% inhabitants are Hungarians,
some 35% Croats and just under 20% Serbs, one may mention just
under 2% Germans. Beside the Catholic and Orthodox denominations,
here is one of main centres of Kalvinists in Croatia (mostly the
Hungarians, although more then half of them are Catholics), but
also several other reformist communities thrive there (most of
the villages have at least two churches of various denomination).
By area relatively large community, covers wast rich lowlands
changing into marshes towards east as they approach the Danube,
while the soft sloped hilly regions in the north produces one of
the best vines in wider region, as the community name indicates -
literally meaning "Duke's Vineyards". The same meaning
have also the Hungarian and Serb names, the languages that are
also official in the community: Hercegszolos, Кнежеви
Виногради.
The coat of arms of Knezevi Vinogradi is: vert three bunches of
grapes or with slip conjoined on a tun affronty proper and in
chief a wheat ear fesswise.
The grapes and the barrel (heraldic term for it is a tun,
although usually it is shown horizontally lengthwise - I used
afrontty above, although probably there is a better way to blazon
it) refer to the name of the community and the wheat ear depicts
the other most important product of the region. The green
background as well as the yellow field of the flag represent the
argicultural wealth of the community.
The flag is yellow with the coat of arms in the centre.
Possibly there is a ceremonial flag, that may be similar with the
one of the Erdut community (including
all three official names), but we shall have to confirm that yet.
The symbols are aparently adopted with the amendments to the
Statutes in 2006, when at the same time the decision on usage of
the symbols was aodpted. In May 2007, the amendments to the
Statutes change slightly the blazon wording, but probably only
correcting the wording to the intended design (since the typos
and slight grammar errors in the rest of the blazon were left
standing unnoticed - or was there really a different design
adopted initially?). The texts of the statutes and decisions are
available from the web site of the community.

In the mean time, I have received an answer from the
community. It is indeed true that the coat of arms and the flag
design was slightly changed from 2006 to 2007. Namely, the
original design was not approved by the Central authorities and
the new drawing was prepared.
This new drawing, now available at the web site and reported by
me has not yet received the final approval from the central
authorities, although the community is fairly certain that this
is indeed what is going to be approved and the rest of the
process is only formality.
The design of the symbols was made by officials from the Primary
School Knezevi Vinogradi, the director Ivan Prgomet and the arts
teacher Ivan Zulec.
