Gorjani is a community in the Osijek-Baranya County near the
city of Šakovo, about 1'800
inhabitants in two settlements Gorjani and Tomaanci. An
interesting folklore custom is preserved in Gorjani, named
"ljelje" - a procession of women in rich folk costumes
holding sabres, a custom from the period of Turkish raids, when
it is said that on one occasion Turks captured all the man from
the village, while the women dressed up in their richest costumes
took weapons and liberated their husbands.
On the web site
of the County there is a coat of arms (see: Previous
Coat of Arms) shown. The coat of arms is most probably not
approved by the Ministry of Administration and is thus in
unofficial use.
The coat of arms is per fess, in dexter argent a church sable
issuant from a mount gules on which is running a marten of the
second and in the chief also gules a mullet of the first and in
sinister azure a crowned serpent erect sable eating an orb of the
same.

Some days ago I reported on the coat of arms of Gorjani shown
on the County site, however, it was easy to conclude that the
coat of arms there is hardly approved by the central authorities.
The Heraldic Art site shows and other design - no doubt initially
based on the aforementioned previous pattern, but within the
modern Croatian heraldic design principles. I assume that the
heraldic company was called upon when the previous design did not
pass the central authorities and that they redesigned it, leaving
only the "interesting" part of the design.
The new coat of arms of Gorjani is: gules a serpent erect eating
an orb all or. There is, without much doubt, a flag to go with
it, but for the moment, unknown.

I received information from Ivan Pavic, mayor of Gorjani in
period 1993-1997, who was thus involved in the event on adoption
of the previous symbols. The coat of arms and the flag were
adopted in the occasion of celebration of the 750th anniversary
of the first written mention of Gorjani held on 17 December 1994.
The symbols were designed by Prof. Dr. Ivan Balta, the professor
of the auxilliary historical sciences at the Osijek University.
The invitation card for the celebration blazons the coat of arms
and explain its symbolic, and shows and explains the flag.
The eight times bent snake with the orb is taken from the coat of
arms of Gorjanski family, the mullet is for the Morning Star
symbolizing the renaissance and hope, and its rounded points
remind to the Slavonian medieval coins. The church pictured is
the old Church of the Three Holy Kings in Gorjani, with
embattlements symbolizing the defence against enemy, while the
marten in the base designate Gorjani affiliation to Slavonia.
The flag designed and produced at the same time: vertically
divided into blue and white with red squares along the fly edge
forming a trinagle 1+2+3, and overall the coat of arms. Ratio
3:5.
The colours as said to symbolise: blue - unity and concordance,
white - equality, red - freedom and patriotism.
This design was, as I suspected, not approved by the Central
State Office for Administration, but since adoption of the new
symbols for the community, these are used as the symbols of the
village of Gorjani itself.
