Overview

The coat of arms is Gules, a Semi Lion rampant Or langued and armed of the field holding a sword Argent hilt and pommel of the second, issuant from a Water-mill Wheel of the third. The shield is bordered Or, and set between an oak and a lime branches Or both fructed, and below all a ribbon of the same, background Gules, bearing the name of the city Sable.
Water mills are characteristic item on many waterfalls on the four rivers on which Slunj is lying. The flag is blue with the shield of arms set in the middle. There exists also a ceremonial flag, a blue vertical banner with full coat of arms in the middle, but the exact shape and ornamentation is not known. Adopted: around 1995 (?).

The web site of the city provides some further insights. The original decision on the coat of arms and the flag of 1995 adopted somewhat different symbols, in 1996 the colour of the flag was changed to blue, while in 1997 the current symbols were finally adopted, confirmed by the Ministry of Administration and in subsequent Statutes and a new decision of 2006. On <www.slunj.hr> there is the 2006 decision with explanation on the history of the decisions as I provide in short above: Odluka o uvjetima i nacinu uporabe grba i zastave Grada Slunja, 5. travnja 2006, Glasnik Karlovacke županije, br. 13/06., (Odluka o Grbu i zastavi Grada Slunja, svibanj 1995, Glasnik Karlovacke županije, 8/95; Izmjena Odluke, svibanj 1996, Glasnik Karlovacke županije, 11/96; Izmjena Olduke, ožujak 1997, Glasnik Karlovacke županije, 7/97 Rješenje o odobrenju izgleda grba i zastave Grada, Ministarstvo uprave, 11. ožujka 1997. Klasa: UP/I-017-02/96-01/45, Ur.broj: 515-04- 03/1-07-1)
Also on <www.slunj.hr>, one can found the Statutes: Statut Grada Slunja,4. listopada 2001, Glasnik Karlovacke županije, 28/01. This sets the adoption date of the current symbols to March 1997. Unfortunately, no info on details of 1995 symbols.

Coat of Arms and flag were designed by Heraldic Art d.o.o from Rijeka and approved by the Ministry of Administration/Central State Office for Administration before 2006.

The 2009 Statutes (Statut Grada Slunja, 09.07.2009, Glasnik Karlovacke županije, br. ?/2009) repeats the description of the coat of arms and the flag as in the previous 2001 Statutes*, but to this now is added the description of the ceremonial flag: blue gonfalon 0.75×1.5 m in size, with three tails, indentations reaching 1/4 of the full height, each tail ornamented with "circular oak branches ornaments", the flag is edged with golden ribbon and has fringes at the bottom. In the centre of it there is the golden bordered coat of arms, above it the inscription GRAD SLUNJ and beneath it golden branches of linden and oak forming a V-shape.

"ceremonial version"

This is what one may call "ceremonial version", the proper Coat of Arms is the shield only.
