The Bar Yacht Club was established in London in about 1937, and was granted a
special ensign in 1956. Bar is the collective name given to those lawyers known
as barristers who are qualified to plead in the higher courts. The emblem is a
roll of parchment tied with red tape. In Britain 'red tape' is a phrase for
annoying and unnecessary rules and regulations. It is a reference to the red
tape (which is actually pink) used by government offices to tie up bundles of
