Presentation of L. Bureau & Fils

The company Messieurs Louis Bureau & Fils was founded in Nantes in 1897. A law sponsoring shipping activity (loi sur les primes à la navigation) was voted in France in 1893, which triggered the creation of several shipping companies in the end of the XIXth century.

Several shipyards in Nantes were then famous for the building of big sailing boats. The Bureau vessels were built by the Dubigeon shipyard. There are at least 12 such vessels in the record: Beaumanoir, Sainte-Anne, Saint-Donatien, Saint-Rogatien, Mezly, David d'Angers, Lafayette, Léon Bureau, Léon XIII, Anne de Bretagne, Françoise d'Amboise and Saint-Louis.

It is very probable that the company ceased to exist after the First World War.

The shipping company Bureau Frères et Baillargeau, which existed in Nantes in the same period, had probably family links with L. Bureau & Fils.
