Beynes is a municipality of c. 7,000 inhabitants, located on the
river Maudre.
The origin of the name of Beynes might be Latin (Nibarnium,
IXth century; Bania; Beyna, 1224) or Celtic
(Beine). The valley of Mauldre is orthogonal to the valley of
Seine, and was therefore a defence line against potential Norman or
English invaders. This situation explained why a fort was built in
Beynes, although the city is located in the back of the valley. In
the XIIth century, Beynes belonged to the St. Magloire's abbey and
was registered as a parish in 1159.
There was in the past a place in Saskatchewan (Canada) called Beynes, whose first inhabitants came from Beynes in France.

The flag of Beynes is white with the municipal arms placed in the middle of the flag.
The arms of Beynes were designed by the heraldist Mireille Louis. On dexter are shown the arms of the Duke of Brissac, who owned Beynes; on sinister are shown the arms of the lords of Montfort-l'Amaury, who owned Beynes in the XIIIth centuries. In the point of the flag, the oak stands for the forest of Beynes.
