The rowing club Cercle de l'Aviron de Châlon-sur-Saône was founded on 12 January 1939 as the merger of Société des Régates Châlonnaises, founded in 1881 as a yacht club, abandoned in 1893 and reformed as a rowing club in 1903, and of Rowing Club Châlonnais, founded in 1923.
Ranked the 9th French rowing club in 2007, the club has won a lot of national and international titles, including one Olympic title (Adrien Hardy & Sébastien Vieilledent - Double sculls - Athens, 2004) and several World Champion titles (Adrien Hardy & Jean-Baptiste Macquet - Double sculls - Eton, 2006; Adrien Hardy & Sébastien Vieilledent - Double sculls - Milan, 2003).

The burgee of the club, as shown on the club badge, is white with three blue stripes converging to the point of the flag and the French national flag in canton.
