Introduction

Give me Liberty (1990 onward) was a series of Graphic Novels By Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons and published by Dark Horse Comics. It followed the futuristic adventure of Martha Washington (a bright kid born in the gettho of Cabrini Green) who join PAX, a militant version of the Peace Corps.

Late in the series, the strain of a series of constitutional amendements (the 94th one is mentioned) and assassination of the President (and subsequent declaration of martial law) leads to the splintering off of the United States.

Needless to say, the series is quite violent but is done with a cheeky sort of dark humour as can be seen in the country's description.

Most images (and background) are based on a map included in issue 4 although some of the flags are also used in the comic itself.

First Sex Confederacy

[confederate battle flag, yellow venus symbol, white number
by Marc Pasquin, 6 june 2006

Founded by former US First Lady Amanda Nissen on the basis that all the past problems had been created by men. The borders are closed to males and there is a ban on pornography, marriage, sexist remarks and negative role models. The flag's design can be seen in some ways to be canting: an eight stars confederate battle flag on which is centered a yellow venus symbol in the circle of which is a white "1" on red.

Florida

[red triangle, white star, 6 alternating blue and white stripes]
by Marc Pasquin, 5 june 2006

On its way to being annexed by Cuba. Use the cuban flag but with 6 bands (I assume to show the addition of Florida).
Marc Pasquin, 5 june 2006

The description is interesting since the number of stripes in the Cuban flag don't have any significance (as far as I know) and the Cuban flag was also created with the US flag as inspiration.

Fictional flags like these are usually interesting as curiosities, but often I think they show that the author hasn't put that much thought in when inventing them.

God's Country

[green field, white circle centered, red roman cross behind 2
entertwined yellow snakes]
by Marc Pasquin, 5 june 2006

Founded by the Surgeon General (who is more general then doctor) and a coalition of Calvinists. Its government has pledged to lay waste to the impure and create a smoke-free, drug-free paradise. Bad music, bad food, bad language, contraception, pornography and adultery are all punishable by death. Geographicaly the same as Texas. Lead by former dentist Billy Bob Coolant under the slogan of "Guns, Beef and Beer". Its laws are based on "Community Standards" and they have rejected the 1st, 5th and 94th ammendements (ban on red meat). The flag is similar to Texas but with 3 bars (R-W-R) and the blue field is a cut-off (at top and bottom) triangle pointing toward the middle.

Mexican territory

[green-blue-red tricolore, white star]
by Marc Pasquin, 5 june 2006

The Mexican territory was annexed at one point in the past by the USA who made it into a territory after which it became known as "America's Ireland". The flag is the current one with the central band replaced by a blue band with a white star centered.

A rather pacifist country who would seek reunification if it were not for the constitutional ammendements instituted after the 1990s. The flag is composed of 6 white stars on a medium blue field. looks like Micronesia.

United States of America

[US national flag with 20 stars]
by Marc Pasquin, 5 june 2006

This is a much reduced USA with a smaller number of states. The flag is based on the standard pattern with a reduced numbder of stars. Their positions however are in such a way that it suggest that something is missing.

by Marc Pasquin, 6 june 2006

A thinly disguised stand-in for Disneyland, its robotic cartoon characters revolted demanding cultural autonomy and an end to the enslavement of artificial intelligence. The robots have apparently enslaved and commited genocide on the human population within its borders.
