Description

Vapores Suardiaz houseflag here [broken link].

Dov Gutterman, 22 Feb 1999

A shipping company from Gijón, Vapores Suardiaz S.A. uses the white with thin red border design, no doubt derived from the flag of the maritime province of Gijón. The letters RS seem to be normal (not rounded) on the burgee of their website.

Vapores Suardiaz S.A. Formed 1932 apparently to operate the fleets of Angel Riva Suardiaz and Antonio y Cristina Suardiaz Valdés. The letters, which appear to be "RS" particularly in view of the fact that both websites on Spanish and Basque Shipping Company houseflags show a second similar pennant but with a 7 pointed star and red angled letters "RS," which I assume replaced the earlier version which is shown in the 1954 Lista Oficial de Buques de España though they show conventional letters [but could be "AS"], could relate to Angel Riva Suardiaz who had by far the bigger of the operated fleets.

Against this is the fact that Lloyds Shipowners do not show any connection judging by editions from 1953-4 onwards, where the parties are all shown independently.

The letters are R and S for Riva Suardíaz. Vapores Suardíaz was created by Rafael and José Riva Suardíaz in 1944, but the family devoted itself to maritime transport before that date. Now, the Grupo Suardíaz is formed by Vapores Suardíaz (the company) and Flota Suardíaz (the ships). There is more information at the Grupo Suardíaz website.

Also Stewart 1963 shows a slightly different version again in the name of Angel Riva Suardiaz with a red 6 pointed star bearing a white circle charged with the red letters "AS." Whatever the lettering and any connection, the two "operated" companies disappeared from Lloyds in the 1970s whereas Vapores Suardiaz S.A. continues to operate to the present.

Former Version

A triangular flag, white with a dark red border all around and a dark red disc at the hoist charged with a white 6-pointed star, in turn charged with the letters "RS" (my guess, the original image was too small to be sure) forming a circle.
