Description

The design of the flag of the Society of Oceanography of Guipúzcoa was aproved by the Society in 1915-8-25. The Ministry of the Navy aproved its use on board of the oceanographic boats in 1916-6-9.

The scroll around the globe reads "primus circumdedisti me" or "you circumnavigated me first," the motto on the arms of Juan Sebastián de Elcano, the first seaman who ever made the complete circuit of the globe. He was born in Guetaria/Getaria, Guipúzcoa province.

Petit Larousse says that Juan Sebastián Elcano (Guetara, c. 1476 - Pacific Ocean, 1526) took part in Magellan's (as we call him in French) travels and brought back to Europe the last remaining vessel of the expedition in 1522, being the first seaman to have travelled all around the world [or at least the first we know :-)]

Where is this flag flown from? I understand it is not used as an ensign, is it?

The flag was designed to be the official flag of the S.O.G., but it got permission only to be used on board of the S.O.G.'s oceanographic research boats together with the Spanish merchant flag. They also asked for permission to use it on land, but they didn't obtain any reply. Actually, I never see this flag flying in the SOG's house (the Aquarium of San Sebastian) and the Society has no research boats or ships.
