Description

According to Heraldica Institucional de Canarias, the new flag of San Miguel de Abona is yellow with a blue stripe at the hoist. The ratio between the stripes is estimated 1:3. Maybe the flag is used since 1992 (BOC xx/01/1992). You can see a photo of this flag on a leaflet of the local tourist board. For further information, see www.sanmigueldeabona.org.

The municipality is now using the blue-yellow flag with CoA on both sides in the middle of the yellow partition.

It is a dark yellow, nearly golden, square flag with the coat of arms in its centre. The flag was adopted by order of the Consejería de Presidencia del Gobierno de Canarias on 22 September 1997, published in BOC on 24 October 1997.

Coat of Arms

In a golden field there stands the Archangel St. Michael, holding scales in his left and an upraised sword in his right hand. Below him are two fessy wavy blue lines in a silver field. The shield has a border of eight alternating red and golden sections. In three of the golden ones are three green fruits of cactus, each covered all over with cochinilles.* In the fourth is a brown pot. In the upper two of the red ones are golden grapes of vine, in the others a golden ear of grain. The shield is topped by a crown.

  • St. Michael is protector of the municipality. The image is a copy of an icon kept in the local parish church
  • The waves symbolize coast and sea
  • Grapes and ears of grain symbolize the cultivation of vine and grain
  • Fruits of the cactus symbolize the production of a red colour, used e.g. for lipstick, which is made by grinding up cochinilles (a species of lice)
  • The bowl refers to the importance of pottery in the past.
*I think you can't really see the cochinilles, but Tinerfeñian vexillologists know that the cactus fruits theirselves have no importance.

The coat of arms was established by order of Consejería de Presidencia del Gobierno de Canarias on 27 September 1993, published in BOC on 4 March 1993.
