Introduction

The municipality of Palazuelos de Eresma (2,463 inhabitants on 16 March 2004; 35,000 ha; 1,070 m a.s.l.) is located 6 km south-east of Segovia, in the province of Castile and Leon. It is made of the three settlements of Palazuelos de Eresma, Tabanera del Monte and Santa María de Robledo. The municipality of San Cristóbal de Segovia seceded from Palazuelos de Eresma on 25 November 1999. In 1991, remains of a Roman villa and of a Visigothic cemetary were found in the village of Palazuelos. The historian Colmenares believes thet the village was founded under Abderramán I (aka Abd ar-Rahman I, 734-788), the founder of the Abbasid Emirate of Cordoua in 756, by inhabitants of Segovia who had fled the town destroyed by the Moors. In the XVIth century, the family Fabio, of Italian origin, set up a papermill in Palazuelos. King Charles II decreed that this paper should be used in the ministeries of the state, which boosted the local industry.

Description

In "El Adelanto de Segovia", Juana Hita reports the official presentation of the flag and arms of Palazuelos de Eresma, made on 15 December 2006. The arms of Palazuelos de Eresma are divided in three parts representing the three settlments forming the municipality. A noble house symbolizes the ancient palace, after which Palazuelos was named, dating from the Reconquista. The two horseflies (in Spanish, tábanos) represent the settlement of Tabanero, known to be infested by these insects. Below, a sessile oak (Quercus petrae; in Spanish, roble) represents Robledo. The waves in the base of the shield represents river Eresma, the backbone of the municipality. The colours of the shield are azure, for the cold and fresh weather of the area, and or, for the warm welcome granted to all visitors of Palazuelos de Eresma.
