Description

According to Gabriel Bibiloni, the flag of Palma de Mallorca was adopted in article 3.3 of the 2006 “Law about the capital Palma” (Llei de capitalitat de Palma), as follows:

“The official flag of Palma de Mallorca is that one, granted by King Sancho (i.e. in 1311), on which is the royal blazon of pallets and at the top is a white castle in a purple field.”
According to my own observations the flag wasn't however used that way, not even at the town hall. The flag was hoisted so that the purple stripe is at the flag pole and the pallets have become bars.

Visiting Mallorca in May 2009, I have been told by a functionary of the ceremonial department of the municipality that the city and island always have been considered as one entity. Therefore there had never been a special desire of having an own city flag, hence the flag of Palma is the same as that of Mallorca.

Palma de Mallorca Flag in 1689

A Palma Flag reported in 17th century is square and crimson, in its centre the seal of the city, university and kingdom of Mallorca. This flag is reported by Benito Pons y Fabregues as having been hoisted in Porto Pí, which is today a naval base, in the 17th century.

There is another problem: there are numerous versions of the seal mentioned above. The only image I have can be found at Gabriel Bibiloni's site. There is an image showing the tomb of M.C. de Borbo. The image is dated 1689. The seal is placed in the centre of two flags and is topped by a coronet but without any bat. Both flags have tressures of floral ornaments, the whole is B/W. As Pons y Fabregues doesn’t mention any floral ornaments, I chose a simple crimson field. The source might be insufficient. The seal is also used on numerous military colours.

Coat of Arms

The current arms of Palma de Mallorca consist of a shield shaped like a a rhomboid or square lozenge with a golden bordure, topped by a golden coronet, itself topped by a golden bat. The shield is quarterly divided: the 1st and 4th quarter are showing the arms of Cataluña, four red pallets on a golden (yellow) field, the 2nd and 3rd quarter are showing in a blue field a silver (white) castle topped by a palm tree above waves of the same colour. It is the version currently used by municipal authorities, e.g. public transport and health care. Source: own photo shot on 22 May 2009.

It is a dark blue flag divided by a white centred cross. The lower fly contains the five Olympic circles in white. The canton is a flag of Spain, containing a dark blue coronet in the centre of the yellow stripe and an anchor of the same colour at the hoist end of the upper red stripe. I observed an image of that flag at the entrance of the school's building in Calanova (suburb of Palma) yacht harbour on 2 June 2009.

The Maritime Club of Mallorca is located in Palma de Mallorca. Both its ensign and burgee are white with a red centred cross, fimbriated yellow. In the upper hoist is a black bat topped by a black coronet. I observed an image of this pennant in a shop in Calanova on 23 May 2009, a suburb of Palma, the image of the ensign on a tourist map and on the club's website.
