Description

Baztan Valley is not in Biscay but in Navarre. The flag is square, not rectangular. You can see it at my website.

Aingeru Astui Zarraga, 04 Apr 2005

I didn’t ever say that Baztan was in Biscay. Only Lequeito has province quoted. When I posted the image to Vexillum the file name was . In my files the flags of Navarre and the ones from Euskadi are grouped from a single entry because I don’t recognize the separation of Navarre from the remaining Basque lands while the right of the self determination is not generally granted and exercised.

That the flag is square is not correct or at less was not correct at the date when the flag was drawn according to this photo. I believe that in 1998 there only existed a single manufactured flag and this was rectangular. The manufacturer was wrong? I don’t know, but this was the flag in use and not the square version that can be an historical flag.

To be from Basque country is not a warrant for to be always accurate with Basque flags, even if Aingeru is a good source. At end in the Aingeru page is not quoted any official or unofficial reference or legislation, only a bitmapped drawing (that can be wrong, and it is for sure in 1998) and opposed to the mine (that I'm ready to probe that is correct in 1998 date when was published in Flag Report). Of course I'm the first one interested in knowing if the flag has changed or if is now manufactured square, following any official legislation adopted later, but a single opinion unsupported by references, from unknown and/or outdated sources, is not enough for to say that one image is wrong and another is correct.

Even if I was wrong and Aingeru Astui's "sources" were correct, the photo shows clearly that the flag of Baztan Valley is rectangular and not square, or at less was rectangular in 1998 (date of the photo). If has changed later I don’t know, but no information about any change or regulation is provided by Aingeru Astui. As you can see, in the photo all the pieces of the flag show rectangular (in Aingeru drawing the pieces show square) and the flag seems to be more or less rectangular and certainly not square.
