Description

The flag reported by Dov Gutterman in a commercial site corresponds to a town called Cuadros. Cuadros is a small municipality of the Province of Leon (Castile and Leon), 15 kilometres north of Leon city. The flag is white with a purpure lion, bordered by six pieces of red and six of vair. The flag dates from 1996.

Blazon: "Argent a lion Purpure, a bordure gironny of twelve Gules and Vair".

Santiago Dotor, 21 September 1999

António Martins asked whether this was a canting flag, referring to the 3D-frame-like look of the bordure, assuming that in Spanish cuadro can mean a framed picture. This is not the case. Canting arms and flag were the suggestion of the Real Academia de la Historia (Royal Academy of History), an academic body which in certain cases is asked to make a statement prior to the official approval. The Academy suggested arms and flag based on the meaning of the municipality name (cuadros = squares, rather than pictures).
