The arms are derived from the arms of the Abella family, who used three bees in a red field. The bee itself is canting (abella in Catalan). Abella de la Conca was founded by Ramón Abella, a knight of King James I, around the year 1000 or 1100 during the Reconquista.

The Latin root is "apicula," which gave rise to "apiculture" and "apiculturist" and the French "abeille." The bee is called in zoological Latin "Apis mellifica," "apicula" being he diminutive of "apis."

The black and yellow stripes are based on the colors of the Abella family coat of arms; the city was once a Barony. As the town grew, it used the baronial arms.
