The municipality of Castellnovo (1,029 inhabitants in 2005; 1,920 ha) is located in the Province of Castellón, Valencian Community, 60 km from Valencia and 80 km from Castellón.
The name of the municipality, lit. "New Castle",, recalls that the Moors revamped a fort originally built by the Romans, while the site of the village was already settled in the Neolithic. Today's village is of Moorish origin.
Castellnovo was reconquered, together with the neighbouring town of Segorbe, by King Jaime I in 1228 and granted to Berenguer d'Entença, first lord of Castellnovo, and later (XIVth century) sold to Guillem d'Esplugues. In the XVth century, Castellnovo belonged to Beatriz de Borja and was repopulated by Aragonians, Navarrians and Catalans. After the expelling of the Moriscos (Spanish Muslims) from Spain in 1609, the village was virtually abandoned and repopulated again by Aragonians and Catalans. In the XVIIth century, Castellnovo was transferred to the Folch de Cardona family, Alfonso Folch de Cardona being made Marquis of Castellnovo in 1634. In 1786, the domain belonged to the Duke of Montellano. In 1836, the village was the place of a fierce battle between the opposing Liberals and Carlists.

In "El Mercantil Valenciano", 21 August 2007, Alma Marin reports that the first flag of Castellnovo was hoisted on the balcony of the town hall at the end of the procession that had taken place during the town festival. Since Castellnovo had no flag, the flag used during the ceremony was designed "according to the symbology of the municipal coat of arms".

The municipal website has an article, unfortunately undated (but, most probably, later than the aforementioned news report), on the initial approval of the municipal flag during the "last" plenary session of the Municipal Council (maybe the last session held in year 2007). The proposed flag is described as:
Bandera de proporciones 2:3. De gules (roja) con dos franjas bandadas al batiente, de plata, cargada al centro con un castillo de plata mazonado (de ladrillo ) y aclarado de sable (negro)"or
Flag in proportions 2:3. Gules (red) with two bends argent, charged in the middle with a castle argent masoned (with bricks) and open sable (black).
The next step, beside the formal adoption of the flag by the competent authorities, shall be proposals of municipal standard, seal and medal.

The image of the proposed flag and the coat of arms shown on the municipal website retain the silver colour as stated in the proposal. I suppose it will be changed to plain white when real flags will be manufactured.

As said in the news report, the proposed flag design is based on the municipal coat of arms, which shows on a red background a tower argent etc. on a brown terrace.
