Introduction

The municipality of Aldea del Rey (2,012 inhabitants in 2007; 154.31 sq. km) is located in the Province of Ciudad Real.

The castle and convent of Calatreva la Nueva ("Sacro-convento Castillo de Calatrava la Nueva") was built near the village in 1213-1217 when the Order of Calatreva moved its seat from the less secure site of Calatreva la Vieja (Old Calatreva) to Calatreva la Nueva (New Calatreva).

See the municipal website for more details on the castle and the Catholic Encyclopaedia for more details on the Order of Calatrava.

Description

As reported in "Oretania," 8 October 2008, the flag of Aldea del Rey was confirmed on 11 September 2008 by the Council for Public Administration and Justice of Castile-La Mancha.

The flag is a white rectangle, in proportions 2:3, charged with a red castle masoned in black and a red Cross of Calatrava in each corner. It was proposed by Vicente Tocino Letrado and Tomás Rodríguez Peñas, both graduates in Genealogy, Heraldry and Nobility, based on the local history and on the importance of the Sacro-convento Castillo de Calatrava la Nueva, using the colours of the coat of arms. The authors said that "the flag should be designed with the same elements and colours as the coat of arms of Castilla-La Mancha, red and white the castle and the Cross of Calatrava.

There is a drawing of the flag (click on the image to enlarge it) on the aforementioned page. Another drawing of the flag, with a slightly different rendition of the castle and the crosses, is shown on Wikipedia (image by "Jerbez", 27 September 2008; I guess "Jerbez" is José Manuel Erbez?)
