Description

The provincial flag of Burgos is purple with the coat-of-arms, like many other provincial flags. The provincial flags of Spain are rarely used, but at the 13th Spanish Vexillogical Congress, held in Burgos in 1998, I could see two samples of the flag: one of them was in the Diputación Provincial (provincial government) building. The other was in the room where the Congress (sponsored by the Burgos' Diputación Provincial) took place. A cooperation agreement was signed by the Diputación through which the SEV will create the c. 1200 local flags and shields of the province. In the Congress room were six flags: Europe, Spain, Castile and Leon, Burgos province, Burgos city and SEV.

According to Manual del Estado Español (Handbook of the Spanish State, Spanish text only) by Editorial Lama the flag (which has not been officially adopted yet but is used since 1979) is purple with the provincial coat-of-arms.

According to Manual del Estado Español (Handbook of the Spanish State, Spanish text only) by Editorial Lama, the coat-of-arms was adopted by the Diputación Provincial (provincial council) on the 9th November 1877.

A large image of the arms is available at the Diputación Provincial website. I have assumed that the arms is as high as 1/3 of the flag, as shown in Ministerio para las Administraciones Públicas 1992.
