Introduction

The municipality of Navatalgordo (294 inhabitants in 2006; 2,070 ha; 1,262 m a.s.l.) is located 48 km south-west of Ávila, north of river Alberche.

Like several neighbouring villages (Navalacruz, Navalmoral, Navalosa...), Navatalgordo is located in the "Navas de Ávila," "navas" meaning here "a flat land surrounded with mountains." The villages seem to have been founded by Blasco Ximenez around 1110 upon request of King Alfonso VI (1040-1109) and subsequently resettled by Gil Blázquez around 1350.

Description

The flag and arms of Navatalgordo are prescribed by Decree 201/1999, issued on 5 January 1999 by the Provincial Government of Ávila and published in the provincial official gazette No. 16, 26 January 1999. The flag is rectangular, in proportions 2:3, made of four equal vertical stripes, green, white, red and yellow, with the municipal coat of arms centered on the white and red stripes.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms is:

"Per pale, the dexter half per fess or a pine eradicated vert vert a garb of wheat or the sinister half argent 'Roca La Peña' gules. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed."

A small image of the coat of arms is shown on the bottom of the pages of the municipal website.

"Roca La Peña" literally means "Rock 'The Rock'." The region of Navatalgordo seems to be a popular place for rock-climbing, with a wide set of "peñas."
